It is a surgical procedure generally done on an outpatient basis but under general anesthesia. In breast enlargement surgery, implants are used to increase the size of the breasts. There are three common types of breast implant device, defined by the filler material: silicone, saline, and composite. The silicone implant has an elastomeric silicone shell filled with viscous silicone gel; the saline implant has an elastomeric silicone shell stored with sterile saline solution and the alternative composition present with miscellaneous fillers, such as polypropylene string, soy oil, et cetera.

Surgery of the breast consists of insertion of a silicone bag under the breast or under the breast and chest muscle and then inserting the bag with saline. This prosthesis increase the breast area to give a fuller breast, increased cup size and give a better form or shape of the breast. The most appropriate technique of estimating the implant size is to fill a plastic bag with measured amounts of water and place in a bra with the patient's estimated cup size. One can see with the bra on and covered by a sweater whether the final result is appropriate or not.
